’Twas ever thus? Still is.
It worries me. Everything in the so-called news these days is an argument. People are arguing about who’s right in another argument. You’d think, after the 20th Century, we’d have learned. A war is nothing more than an argument with explosives. Maybe here in the USA it’s okay, as long as people are just yelling on campuses, bridges and airports and not shooting each other or dropping bombs. Or are they?
What happens in the world to make people think I’M RIGHT and THEY’RE WRONG and that there’s no in between. What has happened when compromise looks like failure; when consensus is seen as weakness? I guess the peaceful, loving types are content to let the unenlightened duke it out; they let the most hateful people with the loudest bullhorns win so they’ll just shut up already.
I’m sure if you asked the people who are RIGHT if they believed in The Golden Rule they would say, “Sure, man.” Yet they wouldn’t think the WRONG folks, over there on the other side of the barricade, qualify as neighbors. “I hate those WRONG sons of bitches.”
Where’s the Mahatma, or the Buddha or the Christ, when we need them? I’ll tell you where. Right here, being ignored.
